Chapter 16: The Front Gate
Gianluca read the card standing at the foot of the blue bed.
"She's at the front gate," he said. "She wants me to say it to her face."
"Say what?"
"I don't know."
"Then I'm coming," I said.
He didn't argue.
The gravel drive ran a quarter mile from the house to the iron gate.
Halfway down it we passed the cousins loading their cars, and the kitchen staff on the side steps, and the gardener with his hose turned off.
Everyone had stopped to watch us go by.
Lucrezia stood outside the gate in her old gray cardigan, with one small suitcase at her feet.
A black car idled at the curb behind her, its back window dark.
She saw Gianluca and her face broke open.
"You came," she said.
"You asked."
"I wanted to say sorry." She wiped her cheek with the heel of her hand. "I wanted to say it before I left."
"You can say it here," Gianluca said.
He had stopped three steps away.
"I did it because I loved you," she said, and her voice rose, so the whole drive could hear it. "I read your first letter, and nobody had ever written to me like that. I was so tired of being the pretty one. I wanted to be the one somebody wrote to."
"You weren't the one," I said.
She turned her head.
It was the first time she had looked straight at me since the dinner.
"I know," she said. "That's what's so unfair. They were all yours, and you didn't even want them."
"I wanted them," I said. "I wanted to send them."
