Chapter 32: Twelfth Night
On the next Twelfth Night the Krewe of Thalassa met in the Knights of Columbus hall in Arabi, and five hundred people ate off paper plates.
The hall smelled of cinnamon and coffee and cane syrup.
Somebody had strung purple, green and gold lights across the rafters.
The chandelier I had tied with ribbon hung over the head table with a new bulb in every socket.
The cook had taken over the kitchen.
My mother had taken over the cook.
They had been arguing about the gumbo since dawn, and neither of them had stopped smiling.
I stood in the pantry at four in the afternoon with flour to my elbows and my grandmother's copper mold on the shelf above me.
I pressed the plastic baby into the underside of the cake.
It was an enormous cake.
It was braided brioche, twelve feet around, on a platform of four sheet pans that Gaspard and the chauffeur had welded together on the dock.
I had baked it in three pieces at four in the morning.
The baby went under the second braid from the left.
I pushed it in with my thumb, the way my grandmother did, and I smoothed the dough over the place.
