Chapter 15: Her Chance
Nobody in the great hall breathed.
Three hundred faces had turned the same way.
"The Princess is overwrought," Fenn said smoothly, and stepped around the king's chair. "She has had a terrible shock. I suggest the hall be cleared."
"Sit down, Ambrose," said my father.
He had not raised his voice.
It was the thin voice of a man who had just come back from the edge of a grave, and every lord in the hall leaned toward it.
"Captain," the king said. "The Queen's door will be guarded by my household, and by nobody who takes the Chancellor's coin."
"Majesty."
"Any man who lays a hand on her answers to me."
He did not look at Fenn when he said it.
He looked at my mother, and she looked back, and the thing that passed between them could have cut stone.
"It's a start," she said. "Not nearly enough."
The old lord with the white eyebrows was on his feet.
"The physician is held in the king's dressing room, my lords," he said hoarsely. "I will sit outside his door myself."
