Chapter 16: Stand Down

Donovan's POV

The interview room had a table bolted to the floor and a mirror I knew better than to look at.

The detective sat across from me with a legal pad and did not write on it for the first hour.

"You understand you don't have to say any of this," he said.

"I do."

"Your lawyer is outside, telling me to stop talking to you."

"He's paid to."

"So say it again, for the pad."

I said it again.

I gave him the date in July, the name of the man who had opened the safe, and the fact that I had signed off on it with my own mouth in my own kitchen.

I did not say Dermot's name.

I said the alarm sheet had come to us through a seller, and that I would hand over every message about it.

The detective looked at me for a while.

"Mr. Kilbride says you burned his pier tonight," he said.

"Mr. Kilbride has a ledger he wants burned."

"That's a theory."

"It's also a fire that started at noon, when he sent his crew home."

He wrote that down.

It was the first thing he wrote.

At eleven, he let me go with a warning not to leave the state and a look that said he would sooner have kept me.

My lawyer walked me to the door.

"You gave them a confession," he said.

"I gave them the truth."

"They're not always the same piece of paper."

"They are in my house," I said.

The parking lot behind the station was lit by one orange lamp.

Under it stood perhaps thirty men.

My uncle's sons were there, and the whole Revere crew, and the Chelsea drivers, and a boy of twenty-one with a baseball bat held down along his leg.
