Chapter 19: Now
"Maeve," my father said. "Sit down. You're not well."
"I'm not," Maeve said.
She put both hands on the arms of the wheelchair and pushed herself up.
My mother tried to hold her by the elbow, and Maeve gently moved her hand away.
She walked across the platform with her gown dragging, and she took the microphone out of my fingers.
Her fingers were ice.
She looked out at three hundred people in sequins.
"I'm Maeve Kilbride," she said. "I've been in this family since I was eight years old, and I want you to know my father is a good man to everyone he thinks is useful."
Someone at a front table laughed in shock, and stopped.
"You've all heard what the committee chairman said today," she said. "I have the receipt for what he was paid. It's in my room, in my handwriting, and I'll hand it to the first officer who asks."
Gasps went around the floor.
"I got what I paid for," Maeve said. "But the heart I got didn't come from the list. It was a gift left to Deirdre by a girl named Kathleen Mulcahy, and my father knew it when he gave it to me."
"This is steroid delirium," my father said, loudly, to the room. "Somebody call the doctor."
"I'm not delirious."
"Maeve."
"You told me to burn her card." Her voice cracked, but it kept going. "I couldn't. I kept it in my pillowcase and read it every night I couldn't sleep."
She turned and looked at me.
I held up the little white card with the cake on it.
