Chapter 8: A Bar in Quincy

Donovan didn't speak the whole way from Milton.

In the Marblehead garage I stood up out of the car, the floor tilted, and he caught me.

He had a hand under each of my arms and his jaw clenched hard enough to show the muscle.

"You broke the rule."

"I know."

"You walked into a room full of your father's men with a pump on your shoulder and no one at your back."

"I had a phone in my pocket."

"You went white on his steps," Donovan said. "I sat at the end of the drive with my hand on the door and I did not come, because I told you I wouldn't."

His voice was low and rough.

"He flinched," I said. "The chairman. I asked about the envelope and he dropped his fork."

"It was a gamble with your life."

"It's my life."

"I know that," he said, and he almost shouted it. "I know whose it is."

Dermot came in through the side door and stopped, with the car keys in his hand.

"Should I leave?"

"Stay," I said.

I turned to Donovan.

"You said you'd tell me how the alarm sheet got to you. In the car. You said not yet."

"Deirdre."

"I went to that dinner to see my father's face."

I looked at him.

"My sister swore she hadn't done it. I need to know."

Donovan looked at Dermot.

"Tell her," Dermot said gently. "She's earned it, Donny."

Donovan turned away and put his hands on the workbench.

"You tell it," he said. "You're the one she sold it to."

Dermot took off his cap.

"June," he said. "A bar in Quincy, a Tuesday."

He turned the cap in his hands.

"A small girl with short red hair sat down beside me and ordered a ginger ale. She had an oxygen line in her coat pocket. I thought she was lost."
