Chapter 13: Nobody Follows
Felicity lunged across the rug and snatched the doctor's printed page off the tea table.
She tore it down the middle.
Then she tore the halves again, hard, with both hands, and let the pieces fall.
"Nobody should believe a piece of paper over me," she said. Her voice shook, and this time I could not tell if it was on purpose.
"I have the original on my phone," said the doctor. He did not raise his voice. "And the laboratory keeps its own copy."
Douglas stepped between her and the table.
He took her right wrist, gently, and held it up between them.
"Let go of me," Felicity said.
"You tore it with that hand."
"So?"
"Four years ago you couldn't lift a teacup with it."
She looked down at his fingers.
The thin white scar ran across the top of her wrist, and she had used that wrist to rip a page into quarters without a flinch.
Douglas let go and stepped back, and his face had gone white.
"Caleb," Felicity said. She did not look away from Douglas. "Take me out of here."
Caleb did not move for a long moment.
I watched his face and I could see him walking toward her and away from her at the same time.
Then he crossed the room and put his coat around her shoulders.
"I'm taking her home," he said. "Nobody follows us."
"Caleb," I said.
"I said don't."
He stopped at the door and spoke to the carpet.
"I believe you've got Mom's chin and the streak. I don't believe a doctor with a cotton swab." He lifted his head. "My lab. My person. I watch the seal go on the tube, and I watch it open."
