Chapter 6: Tea With Felicity

Felicity texted me the next morning.

I won't come near Polly again. Please let me explain. Just tea. Anywhere you choose.

I chose the corner cafe by the bakery, in daylight, with a window.

I wanted to see her face when she lied.

She was already there, at a table in the middle of the room, in a soft gray sweater.

She had ordered two cups and a plate of shortbread.

"Thank you for coming," she said. "I didn't think you would."

"You went white yesterday."

"Did I?"

"When you saw my daughter's hair."

"I was startled. You have the same mark, don't you?"

She said it lightly, and her eyes did not leave my face.

"Why does it matter to you?"

"It doesn't." She laughed and touched her cup. "I only thought, there are Lowells with white hair, aren't there? Douglas's grandfather?"

"I wouldn't know."

"No. Of course not."

She passed me the plate.

Her wrist, the one that had cracked on the stairs, had a thin white scar that she did not bother to cover.

I did not take a cookie.

"Ivy, I'll be honest, because I think you're the honest one." She put her hands together. "I've spent four years being the girl everyone blamed when you died. Philip won't look at me. Caleb drinks. Douglas won't set a date."

"I'm sorry for all that."

"I'm not asking you to be sorry. I'm asking for peace."

She opened her bag and set a long envelope on the table between us.
