Chapter 10: The Dare

Valentina did what she always did when a room turned against her.

She cried.

Her face crumpled, and she pressed both hands to her mouth.

Mom hurried over and wrapped an arm around her.

"Look what you've done," Mom said to me. "She's seventeen. She didn't know anything about money."

"She knew," I said.

Valentina's head came up.

"I didn't."

"The first night, you got the room with the best light before anyone had unpacked a single box."

I turned to Vincent.

He stood by the drinks table beside his parents, holding a paper cup he'd stopped drinking from.

"Vincent," I said. "Two months ago, in the park, you told me you'd liked me for a long time."

His ears went red.

"Elena, this isn't the place."

"You picked the place. It was the day the SAT scores came out."

The yard had gone quiet again.

"Who asked you to say it?" I asked.

"Nobody asked me."

"Vincent."

Valentina said his name sharply, as a warning.

He glanced at her, and I saw it in his face.

I had been right.

"She said you'd be hurt about the school," he said, and his voice cracked. "She said if I was nice to you, you'd stop being upset and the house would be calmer. She said it was a kind thing to do. I didn't think it mattered."

"A kind thing."

"I did like you," he said. "A little."

"A little," I repeated.

His father turned and looked at him.

His mother's mouth had dropped open.

"You told her what?" his mother said.

"Mom, it wasn't like that."

"It was exactly like that," I said. "I stood in a park and believed you for two months, and on my first night in this house you watched me swell up at dinner and sprinkled cheese on her pasta."
