Chapter 31: Owners

I didn't ask her on the phone.

I asked her on Thursday at a quarter to nine, on the fourteenth floor, with two hundred people coming up the stairs behind us.

We'd chosen the floor on purpose.

In June Halyard's money would gut it to the studs, and the staff wanted their names on it first.

The signing table stood in the corner suite, 1404, between the pink bathroom and the window over the Gulf.

The trust papers lay on it in a neat stack, with a jar of plain ballpoint pens.

Dorinda stood at the window with her arms folded and her back to the room.

"Tell me why," I said.

"Because it's not mine to start."

"Dorinda, you're the reason there's anything to sign."

"I'm the reason the statements got collected," she said. "That's not the same."

She turned around.

"In January a man in laundry came to me with his pension statement," she said.

"He said it looked wrong. I told him it was probably the post office."

"He came back in February. And in March he came back with his wife and made me read it in front of her."

"Every one of you would still be eating donuts if he hadn't been a pest about it."

She lifted her chin at the door.
