Chapter 6: Terms

Damon let it ring twice more.

Then he swiped and lifted the phone to his ear, looking straight at me down the hallway.

"Saltmarsh," he said warmly. "How can I help you?"

His voice came out of my speaker a half-second late.

I hung up.

He put his phone away and walked toward us, unhurried, hands in his pockets.

"You could have just asked," he said.

"I'm asking now."

"Saltmarsh is a consultancy I own. It's disclosed. The board approved it." He smiled.

"Your mother approved it, if you want to know who to be angry with."

"For six point two million dollars of wallpaper nobody hung."

"Work's been delayed." He glanced into 1404 through the open door. "Supply issues. You know how Louisiana is."

"I know how Delaware is."

His smile cooled a degree.

Then he noticed Noah, his expression sharpening into something mean.

"Well," Damon said. "Noah Mercer. They let you out of Corpus."

"Damon."

"How's your dad? Still selling boat insurance out of that strip mall?"

Noah didn't move.

His hands stayed loose at his sides.

"He's retired," he said.

"Good for him. He was never much of a hotelier." Damon turned back to me.

"Is this your team, Elise? A suspended accountant and a union errand boy?"

"You hired me yesterday," I said. "In front of twelve witnesses."

"And I'll fire you tomorrow in front of thirty." He stepped closer.

"Here's what happens if you keep pulling threads. I take that guarantee to the district attorney myself. Bank fraud, fourteen million dollars. Your signature."

"I was under anesthesia."

"You signed a power of attorney that morning. You were lucid enough for that." He tilted his head.
