Chapter 17: Where the Money Went

I was angry at Kate for exactly one night.

By morning I had decided it was the best thing anyone had done for me in ten years.

At seven on Tuesday my sister came through the arrivals doors with a backpack and a plastic folder held against her chest.

Behind her walked my father.

He carried a small suitcase and wore the same gray overcoat he'd worn to every funeral I could remember.

Hannah hugged me hard enough to bruise.

"He wouldn't let me come alone," she said into my shoulder. "He said he owed you the whole flight."

My father stood two steps back with his hands at his sides.

"Hello, son."

"Dad."

"I left a note for your mother. I told her I'd gone to see a friend."

"Did you?"

"I told her a lie," he said. "It's the first one I've told her in thirty-one years."

That was all anyone said about it in the car.

We sat in Kate's conference room at ten, around the long table, with the river bright in the window and Summit's lawyer at one end.

Hannah laid her folder open.

"Mom keeps the mail in a shoebox in the hall closet," she said. "She thinks nobody looks. I looked."

She slid out a stack of bank statements.

I read the top one and stopped at a figure.

"The sixty-one thousand went to an account with only her name on it," Hannah said. "Not the joint one. That account has two hundred and twelve thousand dollars in it."

"Two hundred and twelve."
