Chapter 4: Room 412
Room 412 was at the end of the dialysis ward, past a nurses' station with a dead plant on it.
Trevor was propped up in bed with a tube in his arm and a hospital blanket over his knees.
He looked smaller than he had on the stage.
"You came," he said.
"You asked."
"That's not the same thing."
"It is today."
He tried to smile and it came out crooked. I pulled the plastic chair to the bed and sat.
"Answer my question," Trevor said. "Did you give me that party?"
"No."
He closed his eyes.
"I walked into the ballroom last night and saw your name on the banner," I said. "I found out the same time everyone else did."
"Mom told me you were fine with it."
"I know."
"She said you couldn't come to the hospital for the meeting because you were too busy at work, but you'd signed everything over." His voice shook. "I believed her. Why wouldn't I believe her?"
"Because she's your mother and she's never lied to you."
"She lied to you."
I did not say anything.
Trevor opened his eyes. They were wet.
"I'm so sorry, Miles. I would never have stood up there if I'd known. I would have walked out and let Brooke sit with you."
"Do you love her?"
The question surprised him. He thought about it honestly, which was the thing I had always liked best about Trevor.
"Yes," he said. "God help me. I do."
"Does she love you?"
"I think so. She's been at every treatment. She brings me that disgusting protein shake."
