Chapter 18: At the Gate
I didn't take the writ.
Seraphine held it out in the cold until her arm got tired.
Then she let it drop into the snow at my feet.
"Annulled," she said again, in case anyone had missed it. "You're nobody's wife. You never were. You married a sword."
"On the King's own promise," Isobel said.
My mother-in-law had come up beside me. Her crossbow was still in her hand, pointed carefully at the ground.
"The King's promise was a Penhallow daughter," Seraphine said. "Not a kitchen one. And a proxy marriage is only a promise until it's made good. His Highness's priests were very clear." She looked at Everard and smiled. "Was it made good, Your Grace? In some ditch on the road?"
Everard didn't answer her.
The whole yard waited.
The riders. The widows. The cook, with her arms folded. Ned, with the bell.
Everard bent and picked the writ up out of the snow.
He read it.
Then he handed it to the commander without looking at it again.
He turned to me.
"I'm going to ask you something," he said. "Here. Where everyone can hear the answer."
