Chapter 29: Spring at Frostmere
"You're kneeling in a pauper's field," I said.
"I noticed. It's very cold."
"You already asked me once. On a stone landing. In front of a door."
"That was asking you to stay my wife." He didn't get up. "This is asking you to marry me. With me there. Not a sword on a cushion and a church full of people laughing."
I looked at my mother's stone.
A hedge-wife of the north, who fed her daughter.
"Spring," I said. "In the chapel at Frostmere. With the whole March. And you stand next to me the entire time."
"Is that a yes?"
"It's terms."
"Same thing, with you," he said, and stood up and kissed me in front of my mother.
Spring came to the March late, and all at once.
One morning the lake groaned like the night Ned ran out on it.
By noon it had cracked from shore to shore.
By the end of the week the ice was gone, and the water was so blue it hurt.
The mill turned for the first time on the day the swallows came back.
It ran on the old Duke's oak beam, which I'd brought out of the Larder in one piece.
The wagon master set it in place with four men and a great deal of language.
The old steward stood by the wheel with his hands behind his back as the first flour came down the chute.
