Chapter 7: At the Counter

"Not today," I told Ethan.

He nodded.

"Tell me when you want to say it," I said. "Not because I handed back an envelope. Because you want to."

"That's a hard thing to wait for."

"I'm good at waiting. I bake bread."

I went to work.

The bakery on Elm Street opened at six, and by eleven the line was out the door.

I had a tray of cinnamon knots in my hands and flour to my elbows when the bell rang and the whole shop went quiet.

Diane came in with a woman holding a camera, and a young man holding a light.

She wore a cream suit and a small, brave smile.

"Molly," she said. "Darling. We're doing a piece for the foundation, about families finding each other again. I thought it would be lovely to film us here, where you work."

"I'm working."

"That's what makes it lovely."

The woman with the camera raised it.

The red light came on.

A dozen customers sat in the booths, and two of them already had their phones out.

My boss stood in the kitchen doorway with her mouth open.

"Mrs. Ashcroft," I said. "You can film me if you like. But I'll say what I like on camera, too."

"Of course, darling."

I put down the tray.

I wiped my hands on my apron, slowly, and looked straight into the lens.
