Chapter 21: The Knife

Cadoc's POV

Silver burns a wolf of the royal line more slowly than it burns a common one.

I had not known that until the chains went over my chest.

It was a long, dull, spreading pain, and I could smell my own skin.

I did not care.

I could feel Bronwen's heart.

I had felt it for weeks as plainly as my own hand in the dark.

Now it was the only thing in the meadow that I could hold onto.

It was beating steady.

She was not afraid.

I knew it as certainly as I knew my name.

I knew it through the silver and the roaring in my ears and the six guards bearing down on my arms.

She was angry, and it was clean and cold, and it was keeping her upright.

Olwen walked toward her with the knife.

I strained against the chain, and one of the Regency guards drove a knee into my back.

"Stay down, Highness," he muttered. "Please. It's only a drop."

"It isn't," I said through my teeth.

Olwen stopped an arm's length from Bronwen.

The torches lit her hair red-gold and her gray coat and the long pale hilt in her hands.
