Chapter 17: Left the Group

I was at Pearl's on Wednesday morning with a coffee and Brynn's phone in my pocket when Daphne sat down across from me.

She wore the red raincoat.

She didn't ask if the seat was free.

"I'm not here to fight," she said.

"Good."

"I'm here because of this."

She slid her own phone across the table, screen up.

It was the group chat, the one called Miles Budget, and it was moving.

Every few seconds a line appeared in gray text.

A name I knew left the group.

Then another name left the group.

Then a number I didn't recognize left the group.

"You posted it," I said.

"Last night. All of it." Her chin shook. "Brynn sent me the export before she handed you her phone. I read it twice. I read what Lindy said about me."

"What did she say?"

Daphne turned the phone back and read from it in a flat voice.

"'Daphne is loud and thinks Trent loves her. Keep her happy, she drives.'" She swallowed. "I drove her to the airport. I drove her to her mother's house."

"I'm sorry."

"Don't. You're the only one in that chat who paid for everything and got called a pet." She wiped her eye with the back of her wrist. "I posted it to the whole circle. Forty people. And to her boss."

"Her boss?"

"Lindy works in member services at a credit union. I looked up the page. I sent the part where she wrote that she picked her moments to ask you for things by when your paycheck cleared."
