Chapter 5: Nothing Real Until Sunday

I called my director from the parking lot behind Pearl's.

He picked up on the first ring and didn't say hello.

"Miles, a patient's mother sent me the video. It says you cheated and threw your girlfriend out on her birthday."

"It was my birthday," I said. "She's the one who ignored it."

"I need to see something that says so."

I had it all on my phone.

I sent him the screenshots from the chat, with the dates, and the line about renting me, and the one about the nicest ATM in Ohio.

He was quiet for a full minute.

"I'm going to take that video down off our clinic page," he said finally. "And I'm sorry I asked. Come in Monday and don't bring a girlfriend."

"I won't."

"Is that a joke?"

"I'm not sure yet."

When I hung up, Hallie was leaning on her car with her arms crossed, waiting.

She had watched the whole call through the windshield.

"He believed you," she said.

"He believed the dates."

"Same thing." She uncrossed her arms. "Do you want to be alone tonight?"

"No."

I hadn't known it until I said it.

My apartment had Brynn in it, and the bedroom door with her things behind it.

"I'm in a hotel by the highway," Hallie said. "It's nothing. But the bed is big."

"Hallie."

"I'm not asking you to marry me." Her eyes were steady and a little dark. "I'm in town one week. You just got turned inside out. We could be a week of nothing real."

"Nothing real."

"No past. No questions about before Saturday. Whatever happened to either of us before, it stays outside. Until Sunday we're just two people who don't owe each other an explanation."

It should have sounded strange.

It sounded like the first clean air I had breathed in two years.

"Nothing real until Sunday," I said.

"Say it again so I can believe you."

"Nothing real until Sunday."

She smiled for the first time all day, and then she kissed me.

It wasn't the kiss from the diner, careful and for the cameras.

She took a fistful of my shirt and kissed me hard enough to push me back against her car.
