Chapter 6: The Wrist

On Wednesday the test was touch.

Jonah Pell set a tray on the low table and laid out a row of brushes, a feather, a small metal comb and a cold steel disc.

"Tactile discrimination," he said. "You close your eyes. I touch your forearm, and you tell me what it was."

Maren sat in the recliner with her sleeves pushed to the elbow.

A camera sat in the upper corner of the room, a small black dome with a red pinprick light.

She had seen it on the first day. It was still on.

"You'll be wearing gloves," she said.

"Protocol."

"I can't do it." She made her voice small. "Gloves make my skin crawl. I get nervous and I can't tell anything apart."

"Ms. Teague..."

"Please. The eczema is only on my hands. My arm is fine."

His jaw moved.

He looked at the camera, then at her.

She watched him decide, and she watched him hate it.

"Fine," Jonah said. "Bare hands. I'll write it up as a deviation."

He stripped off the gloves and dropped them on the tray.

His hands were long and pale, with the scar across the left knuckles. They shook very slightly, and he laid them flat on his knees until they stopped.

"Close your eyes."

She closed them.

A brush moved over the inside of her forearm. A feather. The comb, with a faint scratch. The cold disc, which made her flinch.

She answered each one correctly in a flat voice.
