Chapter 18: What It Costs
Tuomas's POV
I had left the loft at five, because I couldn't lie still next to her and not wake her.
I had gone out onto the shore with a thermos and stood at the water's edge.
When I turned around, my mother's silver car was parked on the gravel.
She was already on the dock.
I saw Sanna come out of the boathouse in my brother's blanket and stop.
I walked up fast and stayed behind her.
My mother did not turn.
She stood at the end of the planks in yesterday's navy coat, looking at the lake.
"I came to ask for nothing," she said.
"Good," said Sanna.
"I would like to see the children."
"No."
I watched my mother's shoulders take it.
She nodded, once, to the water.
"Not today," said Sanna, more quietly. "I'm not saying never. I'm saying you called my daughter a stray in front of two hundred people, and she heard you, and I'm not ready."
"I know what I said," said my mother.
"Then you know why."
"Yes," said my mother.
