Chapter 22: The Last Pew

Tuomas's POV

Sanna called me at ten past three on Monday while I was standing in the paint shed.

"Your mother is at the school gate," she said.

"What's she doing?" I said.

"Nothing," said Sanna. "She hasn't said a word to anyone. She asked for you."

"Are the kids out yet?"

"In five minutes. I'm standing between her and the door." Her voice was steady and very quiet. "I'm not going to scream, Tuomas. I'd like you to come get her before the bell."

I was in the truck before she finished the sentence.

I pulled up as the doors of Hillcrest opened.

Children poured down the steps in puffy coats, shouting.

My mother stood at the end of the line of parents, a little apart from them, with her gloveless hands at her sides.

Nobody spoke to her.

Nobody had to.

Sanna stood in front of her, six feet away, with her arms folded and her coat open to the snow.

Onni came out first, with his backpack on the wrong shoulder, and stopped when he saw her.
