Chapter 4: The Brantleys
The helicopter set down in the meadow behind base camp, and the downdraft flattened the snow in a circle.
My mother stepped out first, in a white cashmere coat that had never touched mud.
My father came after her with his phone in his hand and his jaw set.
I stood at the edge of the meadow on my crutch, with Ben beside me and the red light on.
For four years I had waited for those two to cross a field toward me.
My mother walked past me.
She went to Tiffany, who had come running from the mess tent with her hair down and her face blotchy, and she pulled her into her arms.
"My poor girl," she said. "I saw it all. You didn't deserve any of this."
"Mom, it's okay," Tiffany said into her coat. "She's just hurt. Please be gentle with her."
She said it so sweetly that two crew members near the tent actually sniffled.
My father finally turned to me.
"Susanna."
"Hi, Dad."
"Don't call me that on camera." He looked at the crutch, then at the lens. "You have embarrassed this family in front of thirty million people."
"It's four million," Ben said, under his breath.
"I haven't done anything," I said.
"There is footage of you cutting a rope."
"There isn't. Colson said there is."
"Your brother does not lie."
"My brother locked me in a shed."
"Because you were hysterical," my mother said. She still hadn't let go of Tiffany. "Tiffany told us you pushed her. She had a bruise on her arm this morning."
