Chapter 22: Commencement

"What time is it?" I said into his chest.

"Six-sixteen."

"Graduation's at nine. In Fort Collins. That's an hour."

"Sixty-four minutes," Sawyer said. "At the speed limit."

"My gown is at my apartment."

He opened his eyes.

"Then we leave at six-forty," he said, and kissed me, and we left at seven-ten.

He drove the speed limit the whole way north.

I put on mascara in the passenger mirror and yelled at every car that passed us.

"He's going eighty," I said. "Look at him. Everybody's passing us."

"Let them," Sawyer said. "We'll see them at the next exit."

At my apartment I ran up the stairs in yesterday's green dress and ran down again in a cap and gown with my sneakers untied.

The arena parking lot was a sea of families with balloons.

We made it with four minutes to spare.

Dot was in the front row of the family section, exactly as promised.

She'd pinned a green and gold tassel to the brim of the red hat.

Beside her was an empty seat with Sawyer's suit jacket folded on it, which she'd brought from his own closet, because she had a key.
