Chapter 21: Nothing to Ask
Renata turned in the detective's grip and stared at her son.
"Sit down, Tomas," she said. "You are tired."
"No, Mama."
He reached into the inside pocket of his suit jacket and took out a sheet of paper.
It was folded in eighths, soft and yellow, with the creases worn white.
He had carried it next to his heart for five years.
He laid it on the table in front of the heavy man, and the heavy man did not touch it.
"That's what she gave me that night," Tomas said. "A signed promise. The chair, at twenty-five. I read it in front of the door, and I closed the door anyway."
His voice shook, but he kept going.
"I'm twenty-two. I'm the vice president of operations, and every title I have, I got for that night."
"Idiot boy," Renata said, very low. "You had it all."
"I had you," Tomas said. "That was the whole price."
The detective took the paper in a plastic sleeve.
"Mr. Aldecoa," she said. "You have the right to a lawyer."
"I don't want one from her."
"Then you'll be given one."
"I don't want anything." He looked at the board. "I'll say it all to a judge, in my own words. I'm not asking for a deal."
Two officers came in from the hall.
They cuffed Renata first, and she walked out with her chin up and her eyes on nothing, and the board members did not look at her.
They cuffed Tomas second.
He held his wrists out together and did not struggle.
I followed them into the hall.
The detective let me, and she stopped the officers at the elevator.
