Chapter 22: The Rope

They brought him to the hall an hour later, with the archer behind him.

Sander came up the middle of the hall on his crutch, between two of the hall guard who had raided my bathhouse the night before.

They had chosen a side quickly.

I was sitting in the Guildmaster's chair on the dais, because the clerk had told me that was where the Guildmaster sits.

It was too big for me, and the back was still warm from the fire.

Every bench was full.

The healers in grey stood along the walls, with Griet in her white sash at the end of the row.

Sander stopped below the dais and leaned on his crutch.

"Liesbet," he said, and tried his tavern smile. "Guildmaster. We were a party for three years."

"Sit down, Sander," I said. "The hall has a vote first."

I stood up.

"Thirty years ago this guild wrote a law that healers hold no rank and follow," I said. "I want it struck."

"And I want the rope law to say what it should have said for two hundred years."

The clerk read it out from the paper I'd given him.
