Chapter 15: A Bite Left Half Done

"No," I said.

Beau smiled, and it was the kind smile, the one he wore for strangers.

"The law says refusal needs witnesses and the Alpha's ear, Sabine. Your father is the Alpha. Does he hear you?"

My father stood under the arch with the roses at his shoulder and did not answer.

"He hears me," the envoy said. "And I stand above him. Say it properly, daughter, if you mean it."

I looked at the man I had planned to marry.

I looked at his pressed suit, his sandy hair, and the hand he held out to me with his palm turned up.

"Beau Tennant," I said. "I refuse your bite. I refuse your claim, your mark and your name beside mine."

"You don't mean that."

"I mean every word."

"You love me." He said it low, and it was the voice from the couch, the one that had sounded like safety. "You've loved me for three years. You picked the candles."

"I picked the candles for a man who was not in the link."

He moved so fast that I almost missed it.

His hand closed on my wrist, the burned smooth one, and he dragged me against his chest.

"Then I'll finish it tonight," he said into my hair. "Right here. Let them watch."

Eli made a sound that I had never heard from a man.

I raised one hand to stop him.

I felt Beau's mouth open against my neck, and I felt his teeth begin to lengthen.

And the pale crescent on his palm, pressed against the pulse in my wrist, flared white and went out.
