Chapter 18: The Stand

Sabine's POV

The Council sat at noon on Sunday, in the same gravel pit where I had walked out of the trees.

The arch was gone, and so were the roses.

Someone had set a plain table at the center with the envoy behind it, and two wardens stood at either end.

The packs filled the pit again, and nobody had gone home.

They brought Opal in on foot, in silver cuffs, in a borrowed grey sweater.

Her hair had been braided by someone kind.

She walked with her head up and her eyes on me, and I knew at once what she was going to do.

She was going to be sweet.

"The Chosen may question the accused," the envoy said. "You are not a judge, Sabine Corwin. You are a witness to your own life. Ask what you need."

I stood up from the bench.

Eli was beside me, one row back, with his hands folded and his jaw set.

He had not slept.

I walked out into the open gravel and stopped four feet from my sister.

"Hello, Opal."

"Bee." Her voice broke on the word. "Oh, Bee. I'm so sorry."

"For what?"

"All of it." Tears stood in her eyes, quick and bright. "I was only trying to keep us together. Dad asked me to take care of things. He said you weren't well. I couldn't say no to him. You know how he is."

She turned her face a little, so that the crowd could see it.

A few of the pack women made soft noises.
