Chapter 9: The Warden's Book

Eli's POV

I watched her limp across the river at first light with her boots in her hand.

She did not look back, and that was how I knew she trusted me to let her go.

I stood on the bank until she was inside the trees.

For four years I had believed she had looked at my open hand and walked away.

I had built a whole man around that, a colder one, who ran the Council's line and let no Corwin cross it without paperwork.

And she had never seen me.

I decided I would find out whose hand had held that cup.

My wolf, quiet at last, lay down in my chest and went to sleep.

I let it sleep for the length of one breath.

Then I went to find Gray Corwin.

He was at the ledge, as I had known he would be.

He crouched over the broken wire with a coil of rope on his shoulder and a grey, sleepless face.

He heard me and stood up fast.

"You're on my land," he said.

"You're on the line," I said. "Come off it, Corwin."

He came off the shelf with his hands open.

He was big, but he was not a fighter by nature.

He was a man who followed a good voice.

"Your sister is alive," I said.

His face flickered.

"Of course she is. It was a rock slip."

"It was wolfsbane oil on a steel noose. I cut it myself."

Gray said nothing.

I walked up until we stood chest to chest.

"I won't ask who tied it," I said. "I will tell you what I'm going to do. In two days, the Council will convene a hearing at the Corwin stones, and your father has asked for a ruling that your sister's wolf is dead."

"She has no wolf. Opal says so. Dad says so."

"You believe her?"

"I've lived with my sister for twenty-four years. She hasn't shifted once."
