They Made Me Run On a Broken Leg. Don Had My Back novel · Chapter 6 of 24

Chapter 6: Nine Days

"Sit down, babe," Eamon said, and nodded at the floor, since there was no other chair.

I stayed standing.

Luca stood behind me in the bedroom doorway and said nothing.

"Mom panicked," Eamon said. "You have to understand that. Those men came out of nowhere and she did the first thing she thought of."

"She put me out of the car."

"She thought they'd only talk to you."

"I ran on a broken leg, Eamon."

"I know." His eyes went wet right on cue. "I've been sick about it. I haven't slept."

"You texted me that it worked."

His face stopped.

It was only for a breath, but I saw it.

"Keep him busy till we're over the bridge," I said. "That was your text."

"You've got that wrong, babe."

"It's on my phone."

He put the coffee down.

"All right," he said, and his voice went flat for the first time since I'd met him. "Then listen. Sign what Mom's lawyer sends, and we go to my cousin's in Cork until it blows over. You'll have your money back in a year."

"My money."

"I invested it."

"You emptied it."

"For us."

"Where's my father's watch?"

He glanced at the ceiling, and that was all the answer I needed.

"I'm not signing anything," I said.

"Moira, don't be stupid. Corvino will use you and drop you. That's what he does."

"He's the one who picked me up."

"He wants the Hourigans," Eamon said, and stood. "You're a ticket."

Luca stepped out of the doorway.

He didn't say a word.

Eamon looked at him, then at the door, and sat down again slowly.

"Get out," I said. "It isn't your apartment either. You sold it."
