Chapter 20: Princess, Alone

I pulled my sweater on inside out and fixed it on the stairs.

Mitch came down behind me, buttoning his shirt, with his jaw set.

The side gate stood at the far end of the apron.

Sadie waited on the other side of the chain-link in a thin gray sweatshirt and jeans. Snow had collected in her hair.

There was no makeup on her face. Her lips were cracked.

Beside the gate, the agent who'd driven her stood with his arms crossed.

"Thirty minutes," he said. "Then she goes back to the motel."

I stopped on my side of the fence.

Neither of us said anything.

"You're going to ask for something," I said.

"No."

"Sadie."

"I'm not asking for anything." Her teeth chattered. "I know what I look like. I'm not here to ask."

"Then why come to the hangar?"

"Because he called me."

Mitch went still beside me.

"Last night," Sadie said. "On a number I didn't know. At midnight. He said, 'Hello, my princess.'"

She laughed once, a cracked sound with no air in it.
