Chapter 9: The Engagement Party
I read it twice.
"They're announcing it without you?"
"They're announcing it to trap me," Mitch said. "Press in the room. My whole family invited. If I walk out, I'm the man who humiliated a crying girl on her engagement night."
"And if you don't go?"
"Then the photos run anyway, and I'm engaged to Sadie by Monday morning."
He took the phone back and looked at it for a long moment.
"Your father needs a Keaton on his arm when he walks into that board meeting. It makes the Halstead sale look blessed."
"So what do we do?"
Mitch put the phone face down.
"We go to the party."
Saturday night, the Lakeshore Club glittered like a jewelry box.
Crystal chandeliers. A string quartet. A photo wall with GRANGER and KEATON in gold letters twined together.
Two hundred guests. A row of photographers by the doors.
Sadie stood in the middle of it all in a white satin gown.
Not ivory. White.
The sapphire was on her finger. Her knuckle was red and swollen around it.
Mom was beside her in silver, laughing, touching everyone's arm.
Dad worked the room with a scotch, shaking hands.
I saw Victor Halstead by the bar. A big, smooth man with a tan in October.
Dad clapped him on the shoulder.
I came in alone.
That was the plan.
I wore the only thing Mitch's assistant could find in my size on four hours' notice. Midnight blue, plain, to the floor.
People noticed me.
The whispers started right at the doors.
"That's the twin."
"The homewrecker?"
"Who invited her?"
Sadie saw me and her face went hard for half a second. Then it went sweet.
She came right over, her skirt hissing on the floor.
"Molly. You came. I'm so glad. I knew you'd want to support me."
