Chapter 23: Across the Ballroom
I answered Grayson with one line.
No walking. But tell him he can stand at the door and watch.
The reply took four minutes.
He says that's more than he earned. He'll wear his good suit.
On Saturday, six weeks to the day after the church, I stood in a small room behind the Rhodes Foundation ballroom with a seamstress, a baker and a nurse.
The baker had brought a box of lemon cookies.
The nurse, who had once been a drunk girl in a cab, kept saying, "Is this real? Is this actually happening?"
"Zip me," I said.
The seamstress zipped.
I looked in the mirror one last time.
Ivory silk.
Green stone on my left hand, drawn on a napkin and made by my own tools in four nights.
A woman, size eighteen, with her hair down and her shoulders back.
"Ready?" the baker said.
"No."
"Good," said the seamstress. "A woman who is ready is a woman who didn't think hard enough."
I laughed.
Someone knocked.
I opened the door.
It was Grayson.
He had a clean shave and a dark suit and a wrist with no watch on it.
"I wanted to check on you," he said. "Before. Is that okay?"
"Come in."
He stood in the doorway and did not step through.
"You look..."
"Don't say anything clever."
"I was going to say like you." He said it simply. "Like the cover. Except better."
My eyes stung.
"Go sit down, Grayson."
"Yes, ma'am."
He went.
The music started.
It was a cello, low and plain, playing something I hadn't chosen.
Jasper had.
I stood at the double doors of the ballroom.
I could see everything through the gap.
The long room under the chandeliers.
The same floor.
The same stage with the same black curtain and the same small podium.
At the far end, near the back wall, a bar had been set up.
