Chapter 7: The Spare Room
"She'll come back," Pearl said that night, drying a plate. "Next time with a paper from a judge, not a deputy."
"She knows this address," I said.
"Everybody in my family knows this address."
Devin was leaning on the kitchen counter with his arms folded.
"I have a spare room," he said.
Pearl and I both looked at him.
"It's in Lorain, in a half-house I rent," he said. "Nobody knows I exist. It has a lock on the inside of the bedroom door, a bed that's never been slept in, and a nurse who works nights, so you'd be alone most of the dark hours."
"That doesn't sound safe," I said.
"It's safer than here."
"That's true," said Pearl. She hung the towel on the oven door. "I don't like it. But it's true."
She looked at him for a long moment.
"If you hurt her," she said, "I will find you. I was a court stenographer for thirty-four years. I know exactly how people lie under oath."
"Yes, ma'am," said Devin.
"I'd like some rules," I said.
"Name them."
"I get a key. I can leave whenever I want. And nobody touches anything of mine, including the notebook."
"Done," he said.
"And this is only until I'm back on my feet."
He thought about it.
"How about this," he said. "The room's yours until the first night you remember me on your own. No notebook, no cheating. You wake up, you look at me, and you know my name."
"That might be never."
"Then you're stuck with me," he said. "Those are the terms."
"What do you get?"
