Ten seconds. Click.
"Testing. Good seams, kid."
The woman from the line had stopped beside us with her own box.
"Is that a hidden message?" she said. "Oh my God, is it like an Easter egg?"
"Something like that," I said.
Fletcher had his phone out. He was already calling.
Gus picked up on the first ring.
"Did you eat?"
"Dad," Fletcher said. "Shut up a second. Listen."
He held the phone to the doll's chest. I held the heart for ten seconds.
"Testing. Good seams, kid."
Two thousand miles away, a man sat down hard on something. I heard it creak.
"That son of a gun," Gus said. His voice was thick. "That son of a gun took my voice."
"He took all of it," I said. "Chip and all."
"Then go give it back to him, kid. In front of everybody."
The pitch room was on the top floor, away from the show floor noise.
Long windows.
Snow on the river.
Two hundred chairs.
The network board sat at a long table at the front, eleven of them, with the chair in the middle.
The press filled the back three rows with cameras on tripods.
