A year later, on the second Saturday in January, I got married in the garage.
We rolled the sewing machines against the walls and covered them with sheets.
The long tables stayed. Fletcher said you don't move a perfect cutting table for anybody, not even a bride.
So we made an aisle between them.
The three sewers strung white lights from the pegboard to the loft stairs.
The boy, almost twelve and very tall about it, laid a runner of red felt down the middle of the concrete and checked it with his ruler twice.
"It's straight," he announced.
"Is it?"
"Crooked is a crime."
Gracie was in the back row in a blue dress, hemming it on herself with a needle and thread, ten minutes before the ceremony.
"I bought it too long," she said. "On purpose. I wanted to do it myself."
"Your stitches are tiny," I said.
"I had a good teacher. She was mean."
The oldest sewer, across the aisle, said, "I heard that, honey."
My dress I'd made from a bolt of cream cotton that had been in the upholstery shop in Mesa.
I'd been saving it since the night of the red sofas.
Gus wore a new tie. He'd let Drew pick it.
"It's blue," Gus said, offended, at the bottom of the loft stairs.
