Chapter 20: The Hall
The Black Diamond hall looked the same.
The long tables ran down the middle, white cloths and candles, with the delegations along the north wall and the head table at the end under the pegged rack where my father's shovel had hung.
The pegs were empty.
I carried the shovel in on my shoulder, as I had carried it out.
Behind me came the Culm Bank pack, forty of us in black and anthracite gray, in our funeral clothes, with the foreman at the front in a suit that had fit him in 1974.
Eighty Black Diamond wolves sat at the tables, and none of them spoke as we came up the aisle.
I walked to the middle of the floor.
I stood where I had stood a year before, in a black dress, and I planted the shovel butt-down on the boards.
The Crown's delegates took their places at the arbiter's table.
Matthias rose with his ledger.
"The Keystone Moot," he said, "names its winner."
He read it out in the flat voice.
The three trials.
The times.
The points.
Black Diamond's five finishers in the Run.
The Hold's two minutes ten.
The Carry's dropped sling.
Culm Bank, first in all three.
"The pack that holds the Keystone for the coming year," Matthias said, "is the Culm Bank pack."
He set the ledger down.
The hall did not applaud.
Somebody behind me, a girl, was sobbing quietly.
I think it was the one with the dog.
At the head table, the old Alpha rose.
He was a thick, bald man of sixty-five, with Tomas's jaw and none of his tiredness.
