In the kitchen Kazuko ran the water until it steamed and handed me a dish towel.
She washed.
I dried.
For two minutes she talked about Hana's father and the apple orchard in Hood River.
She talked about the year of the big freeze, in a calm, pleasant voice.
Behind us, in the dining room, I could hear Dane's low murmur and Hana's silence.
Hana came to the kitchen door once, to put her glass in the sink.
She passed behind her mother's back.
Her fingers brushed mine on the towel and lingered.
They laced through mine for the length of one breath, and then she was gone.
I stood there with my hand still warm.
I was thinking about her mouth, and about the navy bedspread, and I was ashamed of how much I was thinking about it.
