Chapter 22: Window

The hotel room was on the eleventh floor, and the whole wall was glass.

The Willamette lay black below us, with the bridges strung over it in white and gold.

Rain ran down the pane in slow lines, and the city blurred behind it.

Hana had not wanted to wait for the drive home.

She had put her hand on my thigh in the elevator, and we had barely shut the door.

Now I stood in my slip with my palms flat against the cold glass, and the two of them stood behind me in the dark.

"Tonight you don't give any orders," Hana said.

"Hana"

"We've decided. Dane and I."

Her mouth was at my ear.

"You've told us what to do for two months. Tonight we do it for you."

I shut my eyes.

I had been afraid of this, and I had wanted it for weeks.

"Take it off," Dane said, behind her, low.

Hana drew the slip up and over my head.

The air touched my bare skin, and the cold of the glass touched my breasts, and I gasped.

Dane's hand slid around my waist.

It was huge and warm.

He turned me to face the room and pushed my back against the window, and I stood naked with the whole river behind me.

"Look at her," he said.

"I'm looking," said Hana.

"She's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen."

"She is."

"Don't," I said, and my voice was thin. "Don't look at me that way."

"What way?" Dane said.
