Chapter 17: Suspended
On Friday the boardroom was full before nine, and this time Nate sat at the head of the table.
He had sat there for eighteen days.
Richard sat at his right hand with a single folder in front of him, squared to the edge of the table.
The three directors he had appointed sat beside him.
The four old men sat across from them, and none of them had slept.
The union man sat at the far end in his flannel shirt, with the screen dark behind him.
"One item," Nate said. "Mr. Imbrie has a motion."
Richard stood up.
He didn't play a video this time, and he didn't raise his voice.
He laid his papers on the table one at a time.
"A sworn statement from Mrs. Barbara Hausler," he said. "She handed the chairman six thousand dollars in cash, monthly, for three years."
"A carbon from my father's checkbook. Thirty-six of them, all marked for his keep."
"Page two of the minutes from October fifth. Nine million dollars for his wife's family, on his first morning in this building."
