The keypad at the river lots gate beeped green on the first try.
"New code," Leah said. "Dad's birthday. Brett doesn't know it."
"Brett knows Dad's birthday," Nate said.
"Brett has never once known Dad's birthday."
It was the third Saturday in May, and the sun was already warm on the Allegheny.
Forty townhouses stood along the river in a long brick row, every one of them roofed and glassed and finished.
A wide red ribbon ran across the main gate between two sawhorses.
The crew had come in clean shirts, with their wives and husbands and kids.
The foreman had a new toothpick and a tie he kept pulling at.
Leah wore her hard hat with her good blazer, because she said she wasn't going to pretend she'd never worn one.
Down by the sales trailer, Brett stood with a clipboard and a Hausler Homes polo shirt that actually fit him.
He sold the townhouses on commission now, and nothing else.
He waved the clipboard at Leah when he saw her.
"Thirty-one," he called. "Thirty-one of forty."
