Chapter 14: Friday Is Everything
By Thursday night my brothers had turned my father's dining room into a war room.
The younger twin had cleared the sideboard and covered it with takeout from three of his own restaurants.
"Nobody plots on an empty stomach," he said, handing me a fork. "That's not a joke. That's Ashgrove law."
"We have laws?" the baby said.
"We have four now."
The older twin stood at the head of the table with a legal pad, and he had already written FRIDAY in capital letters and underlined it twice.
"Noon," he said. "Trustee meeting at the shipyard office. Five trustees: Dad, Uncle Torsten, and three outsiders."
"The banker, the old lawyer, and the woman who owns the marina," said Barrett from the window. "Dad's known them thirty years."
"Torsten has known them thirty-one," said the pilot.
Everyone looked at him.
He had a copy of the trust instrument open in front of him, with a yellow marker, and he hadn't touched his dinner.
"Page nine," he said. "The forty percent goes to the blood daughter. But blood is defined as proven by a laboratory approved by a majority of the trustees."
"Approved when?" said Eliana.
She sat at the far end with her round glasses pushed up, a pencil behind each ear, doing sums on the back of a menu.
"Before the test," the pilot said. "Torsten's lab was never approved. Neither was yours."
"Then neither report counts," Eliana said slowly. "Not mine, and not his second one."
"So the trustees have to order a third," said Barrett. "Samples drawn in the room, a lab they choose, results that day."
"And if Hattie is Lydia's," the older twin said, "the forty percent is hers."
"And if she isn't?" said the baby.
