Chapter 16: The Horn on the Table
By six o'clock the lodge hall was full, and the long walnut table groaned under two hundred plates.
Brisket, beans, pans of cornbread, and sweating pitchers of tea ran down the center of it, forty feet.
Lyle Kimbrough sat at the head in his white Stetson.
My father sat on his right, in the chair with the card that read SALCIDO.
I sat beside my father, and the place on my other hand was empty.
Outside the open doors, at the edge of the lawn, Colt Kimbrough ate his supper on the ground with two ranch dogs.
He had stopped looking up.
"Dear girl," Lyle said, leaning toward me with a smile.
"I am so glad you came."
"I am glad to be asked, Alpha," I said.
"Eat," he said.
"You are thin."
"I am listening," I said, and I put a piece of cornbread in my mouth.
Under the table, my father pressed his boot against mine.
At a quarter past six, the hall went quiet from the door inward.
