Chapter 18: Seven Packs
Tammy sat on the steel exam table with her chin up while I closed her lip with three butterfly strips.
She did not flinch, and she did not cry.
Ramiro stood in the doorway with his arms folded, and he did not take his eyes off her.
"Who did this?" I asked.
"My father," Tammy said.
"With the back of his hand, at the table, after the cookout."
"Why?"
"I told him the javelina was not mine to deny," she said.
"I told him I would not stand in front of the eight packs and say I had never seen it."
I tore a strip of tape with my teeth.
"You said the Upper Spring in front of the whole line," I said.
"Before the elder said a word."
"I did," Tammy said.
Her voice was flat and thin and nothing like the sweet voice that read the Count.
"I have been telling myself for fifteen years that Daddy is a patient man who has hard days."
"I have the cut lip to prove I stopped."
I did not trust her yet, and I did not say I did.
