The first storm of the season broke over the Upper Spring at a quarter to nine.
Eight packs stood in it with their hats in their hands.
The spring lay in a bowl of black rock, fed by a seam that ran cold from the mountain.
Torches burned in iron brackets around the rim, under tin shades, and the rain made them hiss.
My father stood at my left shoulder, in his good hat, wet to the skin.
My aunt had come up with the barrio in six trucks and stood behind us in a row of plastic ponchos.
I could see the whole ring of faces.
Hundreds of wolves from eight packs stood shoulder to shoulder around the water, and not one of them spoke.
Lyle Kimbrough stood on a flat rock at the head of the pool in his white Stetson.
The rain ran off the brim.
He held his hands out at his sides, palms up, and the rain ran off his fingers.
