Chapter 13: Chloe Speaks

The microphone was set for a grown woman, and Chloe had to reach up to tilt it down.

I stepped aside and let her do it herself.

"My name is Chloe Staniforth," she said, and the speakers made her voice enormous. "I'm in eighth grade at Ridgeline."

Her mother pushed off the wall.

"Chloe, that is enough."

"Let her speak, Mrs. Staniforth," the board president said. "You had your turn."

Chloe gripped the edge of the lectern with both hands.

"I'm the fourth name on the math roster," she said. "I get Cs in math. In October I got a thirty-eight on a quiz and I cried in the bathroom."

Somewhere behind me a woman made a soft sound.

"I can't do the problems on the district test. I couldn't do them if I had a year. I didn't ask to be on that team."

"She's confused," Lorna said to the room. "She has been through a great deal this week."

"I told my mom I didn't want it," Chloe said. "She said it was already done."

She laid her thumb on the tablet and the screen woke.

"This is our family tablet. Mom's messages show up on it because she never turned that off. I found this a week before the list went up."

Her voice wobbled, and she stopped and found it again.

"It's from my mom to Mr. Haskins. It says: Fourth spot for Chloe, as discussed. The check goes to the fund Friday. Please keep the Sharples mother quiet."
