Chapter 4: Lindsey
Nobody moved on the porch for a second.
Lindsey looked past my grandmother at me. She had been crying, and she had tried to hide it with her sleeve.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I didn't know where else to bring it. Your mom told me where your grandmother lives."
"My mother told you that?" I said.
"She didn't mean to. She was on the phone in the hallway at the hospital, and she said the address twice so someone could write it down."
My grandmother looked at the girl for a long moment.
"Come in," she said. "You're shaking."
"I'm okay."
"I wasn't asking."
Lindsey came in and stood on the rug with my backpack against her chest, until Noemi pointed at a chair.
"Sit," Noemi said. "She'll feed you anyway. It's faster if you don't argue."
My grandmother put a plate of rice and beans in front of her without a word, and a fork next to it.
Lindsey looked down at it.
"I really can't," she said. "I haven't been able to eat since..."
"Since you left a girl on the lawn?" Noemi said.
"Noemi," I said.
"It's a fair question."
"It is," Lindsey said quietly. She set down the fork. "I did leave you. I wanted to stay. I said your name three times."
"I know. I heard you."
"The paramedic in the back told me to sit and he shut the door. I didn't even see you stand up." Her voice cracked. "I found out you were in the nurse's office from a text on the way to the hospital. A girl said you were gone."
"I'm not gone," I said. "I'm sitting right here."
She laughed, a short wet one, and covered her face.
