Chapter 13: Defect
I didn't ignore it.
I copied the coordinates onto a sticky note and stuck it to the bottom of the monitor.
Then I went back through every frame from the last three nights.
The smudge was there on Saturday, faint as breath on a window.
It was there on Sunday, a little to the left.

"What are you doing?" the night assistant said from the doorway.
He had his coat on to leave.
"There's a defect that moves."

"This one does."
He came over and bent toward the screen with his reading glasses pushed up.
He looked for a long time.
"Hot pixel," he said. "Or a smear on the corrector plate. Somebody sneezed on it in 1987."
"Then why is it in a different place every night?"
He grunted.
"A bag of pistachios says it's the plate."
"A bag of pistachios says it isn't."
