Chapter 7: The Ridge Photo
I took the laptop out of my roommate's hands and scrolled to the entry statement.
"I was sixteen. I hiked to an old fire lookout alone to see the Perseids, and a storm trapped me there. In one break in the clouds, I got this. It reminds me I'm braver than people think."
I read it twice.
It was my night, word for word, with her name on top.
"Greer," she said carefully. "Is that yours?"
"Yes."
"Like, you took it, or you were there when somebody took it?"
"I took it. I was the one who was trapped."
My roommate said a word her mama would not have liked.
Someone knocked on the open door.
Boone, with two slices of pizza on a paper plate.
"Club leftovers. Lubbock said you didn't eat."
He saw our faces and stopped.
"What happened?"
My roommate turned the laptop around.
He looked at the photo for a long time.
"That's good," he said. "That's really good."
"It's mine," I said.
"I figured."
"How?"
"The horizon's tilted one degree to the left. Every shot you took this summer, the horizon's tilted one degree to the left."
She stared at him.
"You've been studying her horizons?"
"I've been grading her logs. It's my job."
"Uh huh."
Boone sat on the edge of my desk chair.
"Tell me about it?"
So I did.
I'd never told anyone the whole thing.
I told it plainly, from the lookout to the four minutes the clouds broke, and I didn't skip the part where nobody had known where I was.
"And the boys found you," my roommate said.
"They did. They all said they'd choose me first."
"You told me that in July when you were half asleep. You said it in the voice people use for things that don't count anymore."
