I went to his house at eight the next morning, and he opened the door before I knocked.

He hadn't slept.

He was in yesterday's shirt, and the toast on the counter behind him had gone cold.

"Sit down," Beck said.

"I'll stand."

"Okay."

He shut the door and stayed by it, with his hands at his sides.

"I'm going to tell you something, and I need you to let me finish before you say anything," he said. "Then you can throw whatever you want."

"Go on."

"On August fourteenth, last year, I was on your father's yacht."

The kitchen was very quiet.

"Griffin invited me. A thank-you for the last picture. It was Roman's birthday, and there was a storm coming, and your father wouldn't turn back because he'd promised the guests a fireworks display."

I didn't move.

"The tender flipped at seven forty-two. I was standing on the stern with a drink in my hand. I saw you hit the hull."

"Beck."

"Let me finish." His voice cracked. "I saw you go under with the rope round your leg. I saw your father turn his head and look straight at you, and I saw him swim away."
